Since December 2019,several pneumonia cases have been found at the Huananwet market in Wuhan,China,with unknown reasons.Afterward,on February 11th,2020,the director general of WHO,Tedros Adhanom,publicly named this disease as“COVID-19”.From the outbreak of the pandemic to the loosening of anti-pandemicmeasures,China has experienced outbreaks of the pandemic in several places insidethe country.With the fight of all Chinese people,the daily life of Chinese people hasslowly returned to normal.As a global event,this pandemic largely affected almostevery country in the world.For various reasons,countries around the world tookdifferent measures to combat this virus.Moreover,the relationship between China andAmerica has been an issue that politicians have been interested in for a long time,sothis essay tries to explore linguistic features about the news discourse of Americanmedia and the hidden meaning behind these features.

As a supplement to Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar(SFG),theAppraisal theory proposed by Martin and Rose focuses on negotiated attitudes indiscourse,the strength of emotions and ways to manifest values or ways to allyreaders.By applying this theory,this study aimed to reveal how these news piecesinfluence readers’stance through specific appraisal resources.The author chose 60pieces of news from The New York Times,The Washington Post and The Los AngelesTimes,which are considered to be the most popular media in America,and the timespan was from December 2019 to December 2022.Based on the comparison anddiscussion about the distribution of appraisal resources in these newspapers,somefindings and conclusions will be presented.

1.2 Research Objectives

In news discourse,the global public health issue has always been a hot topic.COVID-19 is a global disease that has been a closely associated part of people’s livesin the past three years.The American media published a large amount of reportsrelated to China’s anti-pandemic fight.Through the analysis of appraisal resourcesused in The New York Times,The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times,wecan clearly see the inclinations about appraisal resources in these newspapers.Theirsimilarities and differences about the use of the appraisal resources can also be found.Furthermore,we can also find how the mainstream media of America try to constructa negative image of China by using these appraisal resources in the reports aboutCOVID-19.
